Before The British took control in India, The British East Indies company had several trading posts and was ruling India’s economy. The Moghul Empire was reigning at the time. At this time there were several weak points in the system of power which led to a British takeover. The first cause was the lack of power in the Moghul rulers. Several small states began to break away from the Moghul Empire. In 1757, Robert Clive led East India Company troops in a decisive victory over Indian forces allied with the French at the Battle of Plassey. From that time until 1858, the East India Company was the leading power in India. Officially, the British government regulated the East India Company’s efforts both in London and in India. Until the beginning of the 19th century, the company ruled India with little interference from the British government.
Next, the sepoys, who were Indian soldiers, started a rebellion. The Indian Rebellion of 1857 began as a mutiny of sepoys of the East India Company's army on 10 May 1857, and soon escalated into other mutinies and civilian rebellions. The rebellion led to the dissolution of the East India Company in 1858. It also led the British to reorganize the army, the financial system and the administration in India. The country was thereafter directly governed by the crown as the new British Raj.
The conquests that had begun in the 1750s had never been sanctioned in Britain and both the national government and the directors of the Company insisted that further territorial expansion must be curbed. This proved a vain hope.In Warren Hastings's period the British were drawn into expensive and indecisive wars on several fronts, which had a dire effect on the Company's finances and were strongly condemned at home. A series of intermittent wars was beginning which would take British authority over the next fifty years up to the mountains of Afghanistan in the west and into Burma in the east.
