The British Raj lasted from 1858-1947 and altered India's society, politics, and economy for years to come. In 1858, the power shifted from the East India Trading company to the British crown, and Queen Victoria was later proclaimed as the Empress of India. While the British rule in India benefited England, it mostly had a harmful affect on India, as the British created divisions between the people, and their rule led to sectarian strife.
